 During the 1880's thousands of Eastern European Jews immigrated to the United States and brought with them the desire for bagels. In 1907 a union for bagel bakers formed, the International Bakers Union. Only union members could learn the secrets of bagel making. During the 1960's machines were developed that could produce 300-400 bagels per hour. During the mid 1980 bagels started being sold across the country, and even in grocery stores, and as fast food.
